Paper Trail Politics is a website designed to connect elections, campaign finance, places, people, organizations, and public institutions through records anyone can trace back to their sources.
Our mission
Lower the burden of understanding government.
Public records are often scattered across agencies, filing portals, spreadsheets, PDFs, and maps. We bring these disparate records together in one unified, visual, and interactive website so people can more easily understand what their government is doing.
Data before opinion
In a media environment crowded with commentary, we focus on records and evidence. We avoid opinion and clearly distinguish source facts from calculations and explanatory context.
Interactive understanding
We use maps, connected profiles, visualizations, comparisons, and interactive tools to show how money, elections, places, people, and public institutions relate.
Methodology
From public record to public understanding.
On every published page, we maintain a traceable path from source material to the information presented. We collect records, review them, structure and connect them, then explain what they show and where limits remain. Each stage has a distinct role in the process we carry out.
Gather records from official agencies, filing systems, and documented public sources.
Check identity, dates, relationships, totals, boundaries, and source quality.
Link records to the relevant elections, candidates, entities, places, and governments.
Present summaries, limits, methodology, and direct paths back to original records.
Data sources
The source should never be a mystery.
Source quality and availability vary by jurisdiction. Pages identify what was used, when it was assessed, and where important gaps or limits remain.
- Official records first. Government filing systems, election offices, agency publications, and official datasets are preferred.
- Original documents stay close. When practical, summaries link directly to the filing, PDF, dataset, map, or source page.
- Time matters. Records, boundaries, offices, and relationships carry dates or periods so historical context is not lost.
- Limits are visible. Missing, partial, provisional, and still-developing coverage is identified instead of being presented as complete.
Who we are
Built by voters, not political or corporate interests.
Paper Trail Politics was founded by an individual voter and continues to be operated by concerned citizens who want public information to be easier to understand.
The people behind the website may eventually form a legal entity to protect the project and its participants. That step would not change who directs the work or why the website exists.
No political party, campaign, corporation, or special-interest organization is behind Paper Trail Politics. Coverage and presentation are guided by the records, not by an outside agenda.
Operating costs are paid out of pocket or supported by donations from individuals. Financial support does not determine what the website covers or what the public can access.

Corrections are part of the work.
Tell us when something looks wrong, incomplete, outdated, or connected to the wrong record. We evaluate corrections against the underlying sources, regardless of a person's financial support or affiliation.
