Office authority

Fills judicial vacancies between elections

Ohio voters normally elect Supreme Court justices. When a judicial seat becomes vacant before its elected term ends, the Governor appoints a temporary replacement.

The appointee serves until a successor is elected and qualified, unless the remaining term is short enough for the appointment to continue through the end of that term.
